Chapter 157 The Old Friend Was Critically Ill
The night air was crisp as Athena’s car sped down the road, her thoughts swirling. The quiet hum of the engine was the only sound in the car, but it did little to drown out the thoughts racing in Athena’s mind. She had been caught off guard by Rose’s sudden change in demeanor, but it was clear that whatever had happened with the care home and the critically ill man was important—urgent, even.
As they approached the care home, Athena could feel the weight of the situation pressing down on her. Rose’s usually composed face was filled with tension, and Athena, despite her usual calm, couldn’t shake the unease that had settled in her chest. She could sense that something more was at play here, but what?
When they arrived, Jaxson was already standing near the entrance, looking more disheveled than usual. His face was pale, and he seemed to be barely holding it together.
“What happened?” Rose asked, her voice urgent, but controlled.
Jaxson rushed forward, his eyes wide. “It’s bad. The doctors… They said there’s nothing more they can do. He’s in critical condition, and we need to act fast.”
Rose didn’t hesitate. “Where is he?” she demanded, her voice sharp and commanding.
“This way,” Jaxson said, leading them inside the building.
Athena followed closely behind, her steps echoing in the silent halls. It was strange—she hadn’t been to this care home in weeks, but the sterile smell of antiseptic and the muted lighting seemed familiar. The sense of urgency, however, made everything feel different. The usually peaceful atmosphere was now thick with tension.
They reached a small, dimly lit room where an elderly man lay in bed, pale and frail. He looked as though he was on the verge of slipping away from them. Athena could see the concern etched on Rose’s face as she approached him, her steps slow and deliberate.
“This is him,” Rose whispered, her eyes softening as she took in the sight of the man who seemed to be the very reason for their visit. “This man is the only one who knows how to find my old friend.”
Athena stood by, feeling out of place but understanding the gravity of the situation. Rose’s connection to this man was clear, and whatever he knew could potentially change everything for Rose and her search for her friend.
She glanced at Jaxson, who was standing by the door, his face grim. It was clear he wasn’t just concerned for the man’s health—there was something more he wasn’t saying. But before she could ask, Rose gently took the man’s hand, her voice low but filled with emotion.
“Please,” Rose whispered, almost to herself, “we need you to hold on a little longer.”
Athena watched in silence, feeling the weight of the moment. She didn’t know what the man’s condition had to do with Rose’s past, but it was clear that this was a pivotal moment. Rose was asking for something beyond just medical help—she was asking for answers.
After a long moment, Rose stood up and turned to Athena, her eyes filled with a mixture of determination and helplessness. “We need to wait. The doctors will come and do what they can, but if we’re going to get any answers, we have to be patient.”
Athena nodded, though her mind was still racing. What exactly did this man know? And why was Rose so insistent on getting information from him? There was a larger story here, one that Athena knew she wasn’t fully privy to yet, but her curiosity was piqued.
“I’ll stay with you,” Athena said quietly, giving Rose a reassuring smile.
Rose’s lips curved slightly in gratitude, though her focus remained on the man in the bed. “Thank you. I’m just… afraid he won’t make it in time.”
Athena didn’t know what to say to that, so she simply stayed by Rose’s side, offering silent support as the minutes ticked by, each one heavier than the last.
In the dim light of the room, time seemed to slow. Would this man survive long enough to reveal the answers Rose desperately needed? And what would happen to Rose once those answers were uncovered? Athena could only wait and wonder, the weight of the night settling in.
