Chapter 216 Everything Is Fine
“Freya, now you’re free. Take good care of yourself and get back to your original self,” Byron said earnestly, his tone soft but firm. “We’ll all have a better future.”
Freya’s hand stiffened for a moment, but she quickly masked it with a smile.
“Byron, you called off the wedding because of someone you like, right?” Her voice was steady, but there was an underlying tension.
Byron noticed her calm demeanor, and his instincts told him she already knew. He decided to be honest. “Yes,” he answered simply.
“She must be a great person,” Freya said, a faint smile gracing her lips. She wiped away a tear, though her expression flickered with panic.
Byron looked down, his eyes softening. “She is indeed great. Very great.”
“I’m glad you can find happiness, really,” Freya said quickly, trying to hide the cracks in her voice. “You should’ve told me yesterday. I even asked you to come with me to the hospital for treatment. What was I thinking?”
“Freya, if you ever need anything, you can still come to me,” Byron said sincerely, his voice a quiet promise.
“Wouldn’t she be angry?” Freya asked, a trace of concern in her voice.
Byron shook his head. “No, she won’t. I won’t let her know about this.”
“That’s good,” Freya whispered, her voice barely audible. “Because I really can’t go to the hospital by myself…” She paused, her shoulders slumping. “I’m sorry. I’ve become so useless…”
“Everything will be fine,” Byron reassured her, his gaze steady and kind.
Before he could finish his meal, his phone rang. It was Gideon.
“Gideon needs me. I have to go and see him,” Byron said, pushing back from the table.
“Okay, go ahead and take care of your business. Don’t worry about me,” Freya hurriedly said, her voice masking the sorrow beneath.
Byron nodded, standing up swiftly. There was no hesitation, no second glance at Freya as he left.
Freya sat there, her expression growing colder the moment he was gone. She let out a long, controlled breath before her gaze completely hardened.
A moment later, the sound of soup splattering against the floor broke the silence. She hadn’t even realized she had thrown the bowl.
In the Fire Bar, Gideon’s face shifted when he heard Byron’s words. “Byron, you’re not going to drive Miss Newton away again just because Freya has returned, right? Let me make this clear: if you drive her away again, I’ll take her with me. You don’t want to make an enemy out of me over this.”
Byron glanced at Gideon, his expression unbothered. “You’re thinking too much.”
Gideon’s frustration was evident. “Then what exactly are you thinking?”
“My relationship with Freya is over,” Byron said calmly, his voice betraying no hint of doubt. “But her current situation… it’s bad. I can’t just walk away from it.”
Gideon was visibly anxious, his eyes wide with concern. “Since everything is in the past now, why don’t you let me handle it? I’ll take her to see the doctor, make sure she gets the proper treatment!” He leaned in, his tone urgent. “Byron, if you mishandle this, you have no idea what you might lose!”
Byron’s expression shifted, his thoughts clouding. He probably didn’t know about Freya’s pregnancy yet, but Gideon was hinting at it. If Byron made the wrong move now, things could spiral out of control, especially with Athena’s marriage looming.
“I know what I should do,” Byron said, finishing his drink in one swift motion. His gaze flickered to the clock on the wall. “Thea is waiting for me at home. I need to go back.”
Gideon let out a long sigh, watching Byron leave. He had done all he could; now it was up to Byron to figure things out.
Byron quickly shed the smoke scent outside, then headed upstairs. Athena was still awake, sitting at the desk and writing a letter in a tone that was soft, filled with warmth, and meant for their baby.
When she heard Byron call her name from outside, she hurriedly tucked the letter away, slipped on her shoes, and ran out.
Byron opened his arms, and as she emerged, he immediately embraced her, holding her close. The weight of the day seemed to melt away in that moment.
With her by his side, he felt at peace. Everything would be fine.
