Chapter 252 Would You Rather Die?
Athena froze, her heart sinking as she felt Byron’s forceful grip on her. His words, full of veiled threats, made her stomach churn with disgust. The man she once thought she could trust had become someone unrecognizable.
“Byron, you’re not the man I once knew,” Athena whispered, her voice trembling with a mixture of anger and sorrow. “What happened to you? What happened to the man I once loved?”
Byron’s face contorted with frustration and fear. “Thea, don’t you understand? I can’t live without you. I can’t lose you,” he said, his voice cracking with desperation. His eyes, usually so cold and calculated, were now filled with a raw, desperate pleading that took Athena by surprise.
She pulled her arm from his grasp, her eyes hardening as she looked at him. “You don’t get it, do you, Byron?” she said, her voice steady now, though it was laced with hurt. “You never really loved me. You loved the control, the power. You loved having me, but only on your terms. You destroyed everything we had because of your insecurities, your need to control everything and everyone around you. And now you think I should stay out of pity for you?”
Byron was speechless, his eyes filled with an emotion he could no longer suppress. He wanted to say something to fix everything, to tell her he was sorry, that he would do anything to make things right, but the words wouldn’t come. His chest tightened, and he felt like he was suffocating.
Athena wiped away the silent tears that had been streaming down her face. “I can’t live like this, Byron. You’ve pushed me too far, and I’ve let you for too long. It’s not love—it’s manipulation. And I won’t be a part of it anymore.”
The room felt like it was closing in around them. Byron stared at Athena, feeling the weight of her words sinking into his heart, but there was nothing he could say to take them back. He had lost her.
“I’m leaving,” Athena said quietly, her words final. “I won’t be your prisoner anymore. You don’t control me anymore.”
Byron staggered backward, his body shaking with a mixture of fury and anguish. “Thea, please,” he begged, his voice barely above a whisper. “Don’t leave me. I’ll change. I’ll do anything. Just don’t go.”
But Athena’s resolve only hardened. She turned and walked toward the door, not looking back, even as she heard Byron’s strained calls behind her.
She stepped out into the hallway, the weight of the decision she had made settling in her chest. She was leaving him—not just for herself, but for the person she used to be. The woman who had been swallowed up by Byron’s manipulation and control. That woman was gone now, and she was finally ready to move on.
Byron remained on the bed, alone in the silence that had replaced Athena’s presence. His heart ached with a pain deeper than any physical wound, but he knew, in some dark corner of his mind, that he had brought this on himself.
And just like that, the world he had built around him—his empire, his wealth, his control—felt meaningless. Without Athena, there was no reason to fight. There was no victory to be won. There was only emptiness.
The door clicked shut behind her, and he was left to face the consequences of his own actions.
The silence in the room felt suffocating, but Byron couldn’t bring himself to move. He had destroyed the only thing that had ever truly mattered.
