Chapter 283 Her Shadow
Caspian stood frozen for a moment, processing Evie’s sudden outburst. Her words were sharp, and there was a tension in the air that wasn’t there before. He watched as she hurriedly carried Mia, her expression strained and uncharacteristically defensive.
Evie had always been composed, even in the face of the most challenging situations, but there was something in her demeanor now that betrayed her usual calm. It was clear that something about the encounter with Byron—and perhaps the coincidences surrounding it—had shaken her more than she was letting on.
Caspian opened his mouth to say something, but Evie was already walking away, disappearing into the crowd of people. He hesitated, watching her retreating figure, a twinge of unease gnawing at him. He had never seen Evie act like this before. There was no doubt that the meeting with Byron had struck a nerve.
His gaze lingered on the spot where she had just stood. Was it jealousy? Or was it something deeper—an unspoken connection to Byron that Evie wasn’t ready to confront?
The quiet hum of the restaurant seemed louder now, and Caspian took a deep breath, trying to push his thoughts away. He needed to focus, especially with the blind date that awaited him.
But no matter how much he tried to concentrate on the task at hand, his mind kept drifting back to Evie. Her words. Her tone. Her reaction to Mia’s encounter with Byron.
Evie sat in the back of the car, cradling Mia in her arms. She couldn’t stop the tension that had built up in her chest, and with every passing second, it felt like the weight of the world was pressing down on her. She knew she was being irrational, but the thought of Byron—of him being around Mia—stirred something in her that she couldn’t easily dismiss.
Mia’s soft breathing against her chest was a stark contrast to the storm brewing inside her. Evie gently stroked her daughter’s hair, trying to calm herself, but her mind kept racing back to that moment in the restaurant when she saw Byron holding Mia. It was too much, too fast. She wasn’t prepared for this.
And yet… it wasn’t just Byron that bothered her. It was the feeling of helplessness, of being out of control. She had tried so hard to protect Mia from the complexities of her own past. The last thing she wanted was for her daughter to become tangled in it all.
But here they were, running into Byron—again. What was the universe trying to tell her? Was she supposed to face him now, to confront the past she had buried so deep?
The car ride felt longer than it should have, each minute stretching into what felt like hours.
Meanwhile, back at the restaurant, Byron stood by the door, watching as Evie and Mia disappeared. His fingers tightened around the edge of the doorframe, his mind still on the encounter. There was something about Mia—something that reminded him of Athena in a way that unsettled him. The way Mia’s eyes lit up when she ate, the innocence in her smile… It all felt too familiar.
He exhaled slowly, trying to shake the thoughts away. It wasn’t the right time to get lost in them. Not when there were still so many questions left unanswered.
But the fact that Evie had reacted the way she did—so protective of Mia, so quick to remove her from the situation—left him wondering if there was something more to their history. Something deeper.
Byron didn’t know if he should follow after them, try to understand what was going on, or if he should just let it go and keep his distance. But one thing was certain: the pull of the past was stronger than ever. And he wasn’t sure if he was ready to face it just yet.
As the evening wore on, Caspian continued his conversation with Brian Hansen, his thoughts still drifting back to Evie. It wasn’t like her to get upset over something like this, but the tension between them was palpable. He couldn’t help but wonder if the events surrounding Mia, Byron, and Evie were merely the tip of the iceberg.
“Everything okay?” Brian asked, noticing Caspian’s distracted expression.
Caspian nodded, forcing a smile. “Yeah, just a little tired. You know how it is.”
Brian raised an eyebrow but didn’t press further. Instead, he turned his attention back to the plans they were discussing. But Caspian couldn’t shake the feeling that there was more to this story—more that Evie wasn’t saying.
Back at home, Evie finally managed to lay Mia down in her bed, the little girl still peacefully asleep. She took a deep breath, trying to calm herself. It was foolish to let something as small as a chance encounter with Byron unsettle her. After all, she had already made her choice. She was moving forward, focusing on her daughter, her work, her future.
But why did it still feel like the past was creeping up on her?
“Evie?” Caspian’s voice broke through her thoughts as he appeared in the doorway. “Are you alright?”
She forced a smile. “I’m fine. Just… tired.”
Caspian stepped into the room, his gaze softening. “I know it’s been a long day. If you need to talk about it—” Evie shook her head, cutting him off. “I don’t want to talk about it.”
There was a long pause, before she added quietly, “It’s just… complicated.”
Caspian stood there for a moment, his eyes searching hers. But then he nodded, understanding that she wasn’t ready to open up.
“Okay,” he said, his tone gentle. “If you need me, I’m here.”
Evie didn’t say anything in response, but she appreciated his presence. As he left the room, she stood by the window, gazing out at the night sky, wondering how much longer she could keep her past buried—and if it would ever truly stay hidden.
