Chapter 289 Meet Again
Athena stood up and smiled politely, her gaze flickering briefly to Mia, who was still happily petting the smaller dogs in the park. The encounter with Gideon had caught her off guard, but she quickly regained her composure.
“Yes, that’s me,” Athena replied, her tone measured. “And you must be Gideon, still looking as charming as ever.” She offered a small, polite smile, though the memories of their past interactions were faint in her mind. It had been years since they’d crossed paths, and while she had always been aware of his reputation, she wasn’t exactly thrilled to see him now.
Gideon, seemingly unfazed by the years, grinned broadly. “You’ve changed a bit since then, Chelsea, but I’d recognize that smile anywhere.” His eyes lingered on her for a moment before turning to look at Mia, who was now running around with the dogs, her laughter filling the air. “And this must be your daughter? She’s quite a bundle of energy.”
Athena glanced at Mia, who was enjoying herself thoroughly, her small frame a contrast to the large dogs she was petting. “Yes, this is Mia,” Athena said, her voice softening when speaking of her daughter. “She’s been busy making friends with all the dogs here.”
Gideon nodded approvingly, a touch of amusement in his expression. “I can see that. She’s got quite the personality—just like her mother.”
Athena’s smile faltered slightly at the compliment, unsure of how to respond. She had learned over the years to be cautious with people who used flattery too freely, especially when it came from someone like Gideon.
“What brings you here, Gideon?” she asked, trying to steer the conversation away from idle pleasantries. “I didn’t expect to run into anyone I knew, especially not in a place like this.”
Gideon chuckled, seemingly amused by her straightforwardness. “I come here occasionally,” he said with a shrug. “You know, the usual—keeping an eye on things, meeting some interesting people, making connections.” He glanced around, taking in the park with a casual sweep of his gaze. “It’s not often I see someone as successful as you in such a humble setting.”
Athena raised an eyebrow at his choice of words. “I find peace in quiet places, not just boardrooms and meetings.” Her tone was calm, but there was an edge to it. She wasn’t about to let him underestimate her ability to balance both worlds.
Gideon seemed to sense the subtle challenge in her words and nodded, his smile shifting to something more genuine. “Fair enough,” he said. “But I imagine you’ve got your hands full with work and family. I didn’t expect to see you here, and certainly not with a daughter who’s making the rounds with the neighborhood dogs.”
Athena looked over at Mia again, who had just finished playing with one of the larger dogs and was now running back toward her, excitement written all over her face.
“Well, Mia does tend to make an impression wherever she goes,” Athena said, her smile softening as she watched her daughter approach. “But she’s also got a lot of love to give, and she’s not afraid to share it.”
Gideon glanced at Mia and then back at Athena, his expression thoughtful. “You’ve done well, Chelsea,” he said, almost to himself. “I can see that.”
Before Athena could respond, Mia reached her side, pulling on her arm to get her attention. “Mom, I met all the dogs! I want to bring one home, okay?”
Athena smiled, brushing a lock of hair from Mia’s face. “We’ll talk about it later, sweetheart. Now, how about we get some ice cream on the way home?”
Mia beamed. “Yay! I love ice cream!”
“Looks like you’ve got your hands full,” Gideon remarked, his voice light but carrying a hint of something more, as if he were calculating something.
Athena’s expression softened, but she didn’t respond. She was focused on her daughter, who was now happily tugging her toward the exit. “It’s just part of the job,” she said, almost as an afterthought.
Gideon watched them for a moment, his smile fading into something unreadable. “Well, it was good to run into you, Chelsea. Maybe we’ll cross paths again soon.”
“I’m sure we will,” Athena replied, her voice polite but distant. She wasn’t sure what his intentions were, but she wasn’t in the mood for small talk with someone who might still be playing games in a world she had long left behind.
As she walked away, Mia chattering excitedly about the dogs, Athena couldn’t shake the feeling that her encounter with Gideon had been more than just a coincidence. She didn’t know what his connection to her present life was, but she had a nagging suspicion that it might have something to do with the projects she was currently involved in.
But for now, she would focus on what mattered most—Mia’s happiness and the life they were building together. The rest could wait.
